Abstract

People who smoke will have an 8.4 times higher risk of developing oral cancer, and the number of cigarettes consumed per day increases the risk of developing head and neck cancer. This study aims to determine the correlation between frequency of smoking and the incidence of oral cancer at Abdoel Wahab Sjahranie Regional General Hospital Samarinda from 2019 to 2023. This research is an analytical observational study with a case-control approach using secondary data from medical records at Abdoel Wahab Sjahranie Samarinda Hospital in 2019-2023 with a purposive sampling technique and primary data from interviews with patients or patients' families. Case samples were patients with oral cancer, and control samples were patients with benign oral tumors at Abdoel Wahab Sjahranie Samarinda Hospital in 2019-2023. Research data from 60 patients with the Chi-square test obtained a p-value of age (p=0.005), gender (p=0.038), and smoking frequency (p=0.024) with an OR value of 3.824 (95% CI 1.150-12.713). There is a correlation between age, gender, and the frequency of smoking with the incidence of oral cancer at Abdoel Wahab Sjahranie Regional General Hospital Samarinda from 2019 to 2023.
